Basel is on the border of Germany’s famed Black Forest and France’s Alsace region. The city, which many consider an underrated gem, is best known for its industrious people and pharmaceutical industry, but it also has a plethora of museums and hosts two major celebrations through the year: Basler Faschnact, their version of Carnival where the town celebrates (but not in a raucous way) for 72 hours straight. The second major celebration, Art Basel, is held in June and is considered to be the world’s premiere contemporary and modern art fair. It has even spawned a second Art Basel held in Miami each year. - For some lighter fun, head to the Puppenhausmuseum which claims the largest collection of teddy bears in the world. You’ll also see doll houses, carousels and dolls.
